The proposed workshop will be the first of a series of practice-based lab activities, which we are planning to organise (with a diverse group of international group of practitioners and researchers) to test and explore a new set of concepts/propositions on “Emerging Models of Transdisciplinarity” developed by the European Design Network (www.design-network.org). The workshop resonates with the CAADFutures 2017 theme: “Future Trajectories of Computation in Design” in the sense that special emphasis will be placed on how digital design tools/methods (i.e. computational design) can aid the achievement of transdisciplinary innovation.

This workshop will expose the participants to a global paradigm shift and how it transforms existing models of innovation and its repercussions within and across design sectors.  Today, all design professions are facing a high degree of complexity and transformation in response to dealing with the problems of an increasingly diverse, uncertain, networked, and fast changing global context.  We have argued that the emphasis in design is shifting from “disciplinary expertise” towards “trans-disciplinary innovation”. Whether it is new technologies; or products such as smart phones, autonomous cars; or services such as Airbnb or Uber; innovators and designers from diverse industries are cross-fertilising ideas, knowledge and methods to drive innovation. We are witnessing a radical (and steady) transformation from designing objects/applications to designing systems with larger implications within and across multiple sectors. We call this new territory the trans-disciplinary design eco-system.

The proposed workshop is composed of two sessions. The (a) morning session will consist of a presentation (by the workshop chairs), followed by a moderated interactive discussion with all participants. This session will explore emerging models of trans-disciplinarity and its potential impact pathways in “design education”, “design research” and “design practice” (including but not limited to architectural design).  The session aims to generate alternative scenarios regarding the role trans-disciplinary approaches to design (thinking) will potentially play in shaping the future at a time when digital and global economy are disrupting ways of thinking, living, working and doing business.

The (b) afternoon session will consist of group design work and hands-on application and exploration of “trans-dsiciplinary design thinking” in an actual design process. Each design group will be given the task of REDESIGNING a different design object from a SYSTEM-ORIENTED approach. The design task will aim to REFRAME the design problems through integration of complex insights, interconnected concepts, methods, and technologies that defy disciplinary boundaries. Thus, the disciplinary thinking will be challenged by not merely focusing on the “product”, but rather on its “impact/implication” on the interconnected and interacting elements (and users) of the larger system within which the product resides. The group design work will be followed by group presentations and a general discussion which will evaluate the effect of system-thinking on the reframing of design problems, and on the processes, methods, products and business of design.

About

Dissemination of Workshop Outputs:

The workshop outputs, including a summary of discussions and the design work(s) produced will be presented and disseminated at the 2nd International symposium of the European Design Network, which will take place during (and as part of) the Milan Triennale, in December 2017, in Italy.

Expected profile of participants:

The workshop welcomes practitioners, academics (including educators and researchers), policy makers, and PhD students in the extended field of Design (including but not limited to architectural design). Ideally we expect maximum 15 participants, and participants are expected to bring their own laptops to use during the  workshop.

Dr. Tuba Kocaturk is an architect, educator and currently an Associate Professor (Reader) in Digital Architecture, at the University of Liverpool (UoL) in United Kingdom. She holds a PhD degree from Delft University of Technology (NL). Tuba is currently leading the Digital Integrated Design MSc course in Liverpool School of Architecture. Her research centres upon the creative, generative and collaborative use of digital technology in architectural and urban design. She has taught, conducted research, delivered various international workshops and published extensively in the areas of Digital Integrated Design, IT impact on Design, Emerging socio-technical systems, Digital Design Pedagogy, Data-Driven Design, and Distributed Design Intelligence. Tuba is the founding director of the Resilient Urban Eco-system Network (with ARUP) and European Design Network, spearheading a EU-wide debate on “Emerging Models of Trans-disciplinarity”. She has co-authored the books: “Virtual Prototyping in Design, Construction and Procurement” (2008, Wiley), and  "Distributed Intelligence in Design” (2011, Wiley); both setting the agenda for the future of digitally networked  collaborative design practices.

Dr. Balbo is the Dean of European Institute of Design in Milan, Italy. He is an Architect, with PhD in Theory and Construction of Architecture; and also co-director of the

European Design Network. His expertise and research work encompasses the areas of Digital

Architectural Design, Urban Regeneration, Sustainable, Slum upgrading and Smart city. He has taught, researched and led courses at the Polytechnic of Turin (Italy) and University of Salford (UK). He also manages his own architectural firm in Turin since 1996, where he has been consultant for SITI, I3P - Incubator at Politecnico di Torino, SISTER, CCIAA and Provincia di Torino. Riccardo has also held positions as scientific members of the CRD-PVS (Documentation and Research Centre in Technology, Architecture and City in Developing Countries); Urban Quality Research Centre and ICT in Construction Research Centre (Salford, UK); Transmitting

Sustainable City, Turin Municipality and acted as a consultant for Fondazione Ordine Architetti

Torino (Italy).

Cesare Griffa is an architect and designer based in Turin (Italy). His work explores the application of advanced generative design tools, digital fabrication techniques and the use of cutting edge sofware and hardware technologies to explore socially and environmentally responsive smart architectural systems. Cesare Grifa studied architecture at the Polytechnic of Turin and the Architectural Associaton in London, and practiced collaborating with Zaha Hadid Architects and Arata Isozaki & partners. In 2006, he founded his own practice in Torino (Italy). He is a Fulbright Fellow, Coordinator of the Master in Smart Buildings and Sustainable Design at European Institute of Design (IED) Turin, Scientific Coordinator of the IED) Torino Master School, and Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at the Polytechnic of Turin. He has been Visiting Scholar at MIT Senseable City Lab (Cambridge, MA) and Visiting Scholar at RPI School of Architecture (Troy, NY).
